The project

The owners of this delightful 1930’s Gentlemen’s residence in Fitzroy, Adelaide, decided to treat themselves with a brand new bathroom, taking the old one right back to bare walls.

After shopping around in Adelaide for bathroom renovation experts, they chose Ken Hall Bathrooms for our experience and one stop shop service.

The customer’s criteria

We needed a bathroom design to suit the Bungalow era but with modern fixtures. Therefore, the tiles and colour palette for the bathroom were going to be the main features integrating the old with the new.

Most of the fixtures and fittings remained in the same place but the owners chose to remove the bathtub which was taking up unnecessary space. It is worth considering whether you need a bathtub or not and it’s not always required for good resale. In this case, the kids had grown up and no-one was using the bathtub anymore. The owners were not so concerned about house resale, they were more interested in creating a stylish space for their new bathroom.

Once the old bathroom had been removed, we noticed the render coming off the walls, so we arranged to have both the bathroom walls and parts of the adjoining hallway re-rendered.

We also organised the painting and we were now ready to install the bathroom fixtures and fittings. As we are a “one stop shop” service, this was all coordinated in house minimising delays in completing the bathroom.

The products

  • The shower was purpose built with a wall that included a shelf for bottles and a foot niche. We installed a frameless 10mm shower screen custom made for the space.
  • The tiles were an important choice as they were the main item that would integrate a modern bathroom to the 1930’s era. We used white 600x150 subway tiles (brick pattern) on the walls and they looked fabulous. The floor tiles were handmade in Melbourne and were a statement on their own.
  • The vanity unit was custom made to fit the space with a natural Caesarstone benchtop and a stand alone basin.
  • We added a heated ladder towel rail which is useful for bathrooms that are smaller and can get a little damp – nice dry and warm towels after a shower are a necessary luxury if your budget can stretch a little! We chose a towel rail with timber sides to relate to the warmth of the tiles and vanity.

The time frame

We kept to budget and time frame and the installation took about four weeks. The advantage of our complete service is that we arrange all additional jobs and can still complete the project on time. Before we started the bathroom renovation, we had the vanity space measured and in progress in the background so that it was ready when we needed to install it.

We did a final walk through with the client to make sure they were more than happy with their new bathroom. And they were definitely more than happy – see their testimonial below!
